Why Comac?
Our HISTORY
Comac's history is full of events. There have been glorious moments and tougher moments, but it has always been people at the centre of our journey.
Challenges always get bigger in the cleaning market, but Comac has always had the capacity to innovate and rejuvenate itself. This capacity for innovation is what has made it a leading brand in the sector for professional floor cleaning.
Comac makes its first steps in a free market bursting with potential
Comac makes its first steps in a free market bursting with potential
1970
In the early 1970s a young Giancarlo Ruffo, already a brilliant tiller salesman, managed to convince the company he worked for to start selling floor sweepers on the Italian market. Back then the market was felt to be too small for such products. The results overtook all expectations. Very soon Giancarlo realized the market needed machines that could wash floors, too – floor scrubbers.
1971
Foreign floor scrubber makers did not believe in the Italian market, so Giancarlo Ruffo set out his idea of producing them in Italy to his friend Domenico Accadia, a mechanic who ran a small workshop.
The first ten machines were made and all of them flew off the shelves.
1974
Giancarlo Ruffo, together with Domenico Accadia, decided to meet demand with Costruzione Macchine, or Comac for short.
1974
Their first, handmade models saw the light at their little base in San Giovanni Lupatoto.
It was in those years that Comac's historic first floor scrubbers, the Lavait 400 and the Lavait 500, appeared.

"We were humble, brave yet innocent, they were a small bunch helping make my dream a reality". Giancarlo Ruffo
1975
The market demanded more models than Comac could make, but above all it wanted higher quality.
Hence the first L32, which Comac had a cleaning company test, with disappointing results. But you learn from your mistakes, and the criticism was a stimulus to improve the company and its products. From this Comac learnt that it needed to produce machines of quality and value, but above all at the right price to create faithful customers.
"Quality products are the best form of advertising to get yourself known". Giancarlo Ruffo
1976
The L16 model is born and makes it mark on the Italian and foreign markets.
1977
Comac launches a new range named Comatic. The Comatic 21 scrubbing machine turns out to be extremely high-performing and efficient.

In these years Comac began sketching out its commercial network in Italy but also turned its gaze abroad. It needed to expand, hence its trip to its first international trade fair.
"You cannot stop – you have to keep looking beyond the present". Giancarlo Ruffo
1980
Comac carved out a leading position with its L16 machine. In the following years Comac completed its "L" series with models with working widths from 40 to 110 cm.

1981
Comac went to the sector's most important international trade fair for the first time: ISSA Interclean in Amsterdam.
1982
The L32 was launched on the market to further expand this historic family of floor scrubbers.
1983
Given the success of the last edition, Comac decided to go to the ISSA Interclean trade fair in Amsterdam for the second time.
1984
Comac grew rapidly and acquired its first headquarters in Via Ca' Nova Zampieri, still in San Giovanni Lupatoto, where it designed, produced and marketed its entire product range.
1985
Comac became a limited company. New machines were designed while previous ones were perfected, built in stainless steel, of various dimensions, cable- and battery-powered, thus creating a complete line identified by the initial "L".
The company was now leading the Italian and European markets and constantly growing thanks to wise and prudent investment management.
"At the heart of it all was the same simplicity, modesty and humility of the very first scrubbing machine. But Comac was growing, and so were its concerns. Every day was a challenge. We found ourselves in new situations. We were put to the test every second. The only certainty was the quality of our machines. To go on selling we had to go on improving the quality of our products". Giancarlo Ruffo
1985
Comac becomes a regular presence at the ISSA Interclean trade fair in Amsterdam, where its stand gets bigger and bigger to host its wide range of products.
1987
At the end of the 1980s ride-on scrubbing machines, like the historic C125, appeared.
These machines let you reach high productivity, something Comac leads in various world markets.
1988
The C100 makes its stamp on the market for cleaning large surfaces.
1989
The L42 appears, the latest model in a line that has shaped the Comac brand's history
Using innovation to get one step ahead of market trends
1990
The 1990s. A period of economic boom, of wealth. To tackle it, Comac knows it needed to give itself new shape as a company. It is not enough to be a little local business forced to experiment. It is not enough to run things empirically, based on its own experience, any more. Comac needs to make a giant leap, become more professional in every angle of its daily work, and look to maintain the balances it has created.
1990
The first C85 is launched, a floor scrubber that goes on to become the go-to in the market for professional cleaning.
1991

1992
It was at this time that the company went international, admitting its third member, the German multinational Henkel, later to become Ecolab. The market was evolving, the world was changing at an ever greater pace, and Comac too had to take that speed of change into account.
"My grandfather used to say it's better to be on two legs than one, but if you don't want to lose your balance it's best to be sitting round a three-legged table!". Giancarlo Ruffo
1992
The C40B and C50B are introduced to the "C" series.
1992
1992 was also the year the CB40 was launched.
1992
Comac's first trip to attract customers was to Rio de Janeiro. It was not just an opportunity to learn. It was a chance to meet people, to create relationships that would last a lifetime.
1993
The C83 and the C104 are the next step in the evolution of the walk-behind "C" series
1994
Comac brings in polyethylene rotational moulding for the tanks for its floor scrubbers.
At the same time the CE45 comes to the range, a cutting-edge, cable-powered scrubbing machine. Easy and intuitive to use.
1994
Also launched in 1994 was the C130, unique among floor scrubbers of its kind for its four counter-rotating washing brushes and its cylindrical brush for picking up dirt, which give it a double cleaning action.
The C130 goes on to become a permanent presence in the Comac range.
1995
The C35 is released, a cable-powered model and one of the first examples of small scrubbing machines for professional performance, designed expressly for small spaces.
1996
Another essential step for the company came when it got its first ISO quality certificate for design and construction of electromagnetic machines compatible with humans and the environment and standardization for the machines in line with existing legislation on quality.
1997
Comac continued to innovate and was in 1997 the first company to launch a compact ride-on machine, opening a new market segment: Tripla 75, the first example of an extraordinarily successful series that characterized cleaning for many years.
1998
On the back of the success of the version with the 75 cm brush head, the Tripla 85 comes to the range.
1998
The times a company meets with its customers are essential to its growth. They are an opportunity to strengthen relationships and find inspiration for future projects.
1999
On 25 September 1999 Comac celebrated its first 25 years of work in the professional cleaning market.
The new millennium was before us. Innovation was the keystone on which Comac placed all its efforts.
The new millennium brought with it rapid and constant change. The internet spread into every sector, revolutionising people's communication and habits, and the world of cleaning was no exception.
2001
The Abila entered the range, a scrubbing machine who performance, reliability and excellent price-to-quality ratio went on to meet with huge success around the world, as it brought the benefits of mechanized cleaning to emerging markets.
2003
In 2003 our trained team from all the companies the Ruffo family owns was officially formed, with staff from Comac, Fimap, TMB, Ruffo and Cofirent.
A new, vibrant network was formally set up, of industries united by a common philosophy for professional cleaning services. They put together their huge wealth of experience, business nous and lust for innovation.
2004
In pursuit of quality and safety, the new test centre was opened, complete with anechoic chamber for testing machines made by Comac and other Group companies.
This centre was set up to do initial quality assessments on each model and see that they respond to their different requirements, by testing them for noise levels, product certification, vibrations and electromagnetic compatibility.
2005
It was in 2005 that Comac decided to broaden its product offer to become a global supplier. It backed up its already rich range of floor scrubbers with sweepers, single disc machines and industrial, professional and commercial vacuum cleaners.
The extension of the product range allowed Comac to gain further market shares and to offer its customers a comprehensive package to resolve any type of professional cleaning need.
2006
The year 2006 marked an umpteenth crucial step for the company. It was an extremely innovative product for the market at that time – Vispa, the smallest walk-behind scrubbing machines.
Vispa represents a worldwide success innovation and has become the most imitated model ever. Considered by the market a revolutionary floor scrubber, it has allowed Comac to enter the segment of limited space cleaning and, in some cases, to completely replace manual cleaning operations. Thus yet another market opened up!
2006
The sweeper department was set up for produce new products. It was here that the first plans appeared for building the CS140, Comac's first street sweeping machine.
2007
Comac's innovative floor scrubber won the prize for innovation at the Pulire trade fair.
2007
The pulse of change and Comac's lust to further stamp its presence in foreign markets led to the founding of Comac Shanghai.
2007
In 2007 the Flexy and Ultra lines appeared on the market. These were large, cutting-edge ride-on scrubbing machines to replace certain historic models like the C85, innovative in their materials and in the concepts for their use.
2007
The CS100-120 sweepers were born, with bifuel, diesel and battery engines, followed by the CS80/90.
Comac managed to innovate in this field too. These are actually the first sweeping machines ever put on the market with the same hydraulic system both in the motorized version and in the battery-powered one. This has allowed optimizing consumption by substantially increasing the autonomy, especially for the latest version.
2008/2009
These two years were very important for Comac because the whole range of walk-behind scrubbing machines was looked at afresh.
New design, optimization of volumes, silence and ease of use became musts for the development of Comac products. In an increasingly demanding market, the company decided to invest on new projects in order to renew the entire line of floor scrubbers with the aim to reduce costs and consumption while respecting mankind and the environment.
2009
At a time when companies taking the environment into consideration were few and far between, especially in the cleaning sector, Comac started a project to recycle the water used in its floor scrubbers, which went on to be called "Non-Stop Cleaning".
The market wanted rejuvenation, it wanted new ideas and new energy, and Comac felt that same desire.
The digital revolution is not only changing our daily lives, but the way we interact with the things around us. Internet use is evolving and objects are becoming intelligent because they can communicate data.
The Internet of Things heralded a new digital era, and technology and cleaning are starting to march hand in hand.
2010
Constant growth forced the company to expand its structure. Comac therefore transferred its base to a new, extremely modern and technological site spread over an area of 23,000 square metres, still in the province of Verona.
Particular care was applied to the premises, which were designed to give occupants maximum comfort and to ensure good work quality.
The whole structure screams reliability, innovation, quality and style, concepts that inform the great added value of the products the Ruffo Group so successfully sells in Italy and the wider world.
2011
Comac presented a ride-on floor scrubber model that cleans where the traditional ride-on cannot reach. Its name? The Innova 55.
The innovation lay in its extremely small dimensions, like those of a walk-behind scrubbing machine but with the added benefit of being easy to use and faster at cleaning.
2014
Comac turned forty but was still young at heart.
The company takes stock of the milestones it has reached, each of which has helped it build its own vision of professional cleaning. Yet it goes on looking to improve itself, to take the quality of the Comac brand to ever more dizzying heights.
2015
To keep a closer eye on the French market, the subsidiary Comac France was set up.
Direct presence proved essential if Comac was to stay close to its French customers, who have always been big users of the brand's products.
2015
The innovative Comac Fleet Care (CFC) system lets you manage your own fleet of cleaning machines remotely, collecting data from them and turning it into valuable information for optimizing processes and making cleaning more efficient.
2015
Comac never tires of rejuvenating itself. It launched two new models of walk-behind scrubbing machine, Antea and the Versa. Devised with the aim of combining high performances with simple and flexible use, they are the result of a new project and because of this also have a totally new styling.
2015
A renewed version of a historic model was launched, and has been among the most in demand ever since – the C130. The new design, in addition to updating the machine, has made it possible to simplify to the utmost all the areas involving the operator, thus making it more comfortable and practical to use.
2016
The company's worldwide expansion goes on with Comac India.
Spread all over India, the subsidiary plays an active role in moulding India's future as a clean, green nation.
2018
The C85 and C100 returned to the market as worthy heirs of a beautiful tradition in mechanized cleaning, and crowned Comac's international success.
Thanks to a robust design and intelligent workings, these scrubbing machines were ready to revolutionize the traditional idea of cleaning. Bringing the most innovative technologies to the table improved user experience, giving them the chance to interact with the machine to make the most of its functions, with a view to optimizing operation times and reducing costs.
2019
Comac has always been sensitive too the environment, which is why it was keen to find solutions to help save water. Recycling water used in cleaning is a solution the company believes in, and was its starting point for the concept behind #comac4water, the natural successor to the "Non-Stop Cleaning" project begun ten years before.
Comac made the first moves towards product certification for the environmental impact of its floor scrubbers.
A new decade is beginning, scarred from the off by the uncertainties unleashed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
But this is not just a time of uncertainties, but of great hopes and of taking action. The World Health Organization has set out 13 challenges for this decade. Top of the list is climate change, followed by the need to come up with a system of preparing for and preventing epidemics, so as to protect the health of the world's people.
2020
2020 was a challenging year for Comac, as like everyone else it found itself up against a pandemic. Knowing how important cleaning is to protecting people's health, the company put all its efforts into a complete range of machines for sanitizing floors and surfaces.
2020
To strengthen its presence in Europe, Comac set up the subsidiary Comac Iberia.
2020
Taking responsibility for climate change has led Comac to voluntarily embrace the ISO 14067 standard which defines the requirements for the quantification of the product's carbon footprint, also known as CFP. It is a methodology based on the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) with which the emission of GHG (greenhouse gases) is measured throughout the life cycle of the product. The data resulting from this calculation corresponds to the impact that the product has on climate change.
2021
The company has chosen to voluntarily undertake the SA 8000 certification process, the international standard which aims to evaluate aspects of corporate management concerning Corporate Social Responsibility. Obtaining this certification has allowed Comac to demonstrate, both nationally and internationally, the ethics of its production cycle that is based on strengthening the rights of the people involved.
2022
New technologies are driving the evolution of cleaning and Comac presents SELF.Y: the new smart collaborative cleaning partner. SELF.Y is more than a floor scrubber, it is the autonomous cleaning concept designed by Comac to be integrated seamlessly into the team dedicated to the premises maintenance, thus giving more value to people's time.
