Why Comac?
Digital sustainability
Sustainability isn’t just about the products we create; it encompasses every aspect of Comac’s activities, including our digital impact. The internet is one of the most revolutionary inventions of our time, but it comes with a hidden cost that we often overlook: digital pollution. The environmental impact of online activities is real and constantly growing, with the web significantly contributing to global CO2 emissions. That’s why we decided to address this challenge with an innovative project aimed at making our company website greener and more efficient.
Digital pollution: an invisible but real problem
When we think about climate change, we often focus on more “visible” activities in sectors such as industry, transportation, and energy, overlooking the impact that the digital world has on the environment. In reality, the internet is responsible for a significant share of CO2 emissions. If it were a country, it would rank as the fourth-largest emitter globally, just behind the USA, China, and India, as highlighted in the report Lean ICT: Towards Digital Sobriety by The Shift Project.
The environmental impact of the web is primarily caused by:
- Servers and data centers, which consume vast amounts of energy, often sourced from non-renewable resources;
- Cooling systems, essential for the operation of data centers but also highly energy-intensive;
- Inefficient website design, which increases energy consumption and the carbon footprint.
Digital pollution is therefore a real issue. For this reason, at Comac we have chosen to take direct action by optimizing our website to reduce its energy consumption.
How we optimize Comac’s website for sustainability
For Comac, digital sustainability means actively reducing the environmental impact of our website. For this reason, we are working on concrete actions to continuously improve the energy efficiency of our site, such as:
- Optimizing images and multimedia content, reducing their size and improving their format to decrease data and energy consumption.
- Streamlining the code, by eliminating unnecessary elements that increase the site’s energy load.
Thanks to these measures, we aim to reduce our website’s CO2 emissions by 24%, equivalent to approximately 43 kg of CO2 less. The goal is not only to reduce environmental impact but also to enhance the speed and usability of Comac’s website, providing a smooth and sustainable online experience.
